A baby pangolin and an adult one.

Habitat: throughout Africa and Asia
Status: varies from Least Concern to Endangered, depending on species
Meet the creature that looks just like a walking pine cone. This is the Pangolin (order Pholidota) which is otherwise known as a Scaly Anteater.

There are eight extant species of this bizarre creature that all share the same characteristic artichoke-esque appearance. Those scaly plates are made of keratin - the same material that human fingernails are made of.

When a pangolin is born, the plates are quite soft but as it matures they become increasingly harder. Pangolins can curl up into a ball and tuck their heads under their scales (which are actually very sharp) to protect themselves from any danger. As you might imagine, this is a similar predatory defense as used by the armadillo.

And just in case the predator isn’t deterred by a rock-hard meal, the Pangolin has the ability to emit a noxious-smelling acid from their anal glands.

Reminds me of a Pokemon.

QR Codes Embedded into Sidewalk to provide tourist information.

Rio De Janeiro has embedded QR codes into their sidewalks to help tourists learn more about the city and more easily get to where they are going. The codes have been embedded into the city’s traditional mosaic sidewalks in the form of black and white tiles. When the tiles are scanned with a smartphone, a local map and information is provided to the user in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Brazil plans to embed roughly 30 QR codes at beaches, vistas and various historic sites around the city, helping Rio’s two million foreign visitors each year get around.

Brent Holloman - The Vie Silhouette Project, 2012 - Ongoing

“With the arrival of our first baby girl there is one thing I hear all the time… “They grow up so fast.” So I decided to start a project where I can mark the stages of her growth by doing a silhouette of her each week for her first year (or as long as I can keep it going)”

I am only a couple weeks into it and I can already see the changes taking place.

See them all here

Incredible cardboard Game Boy Color by MaboroshiTira. The buttons are pushable, the on-off switch moves, and the volume dial rotates. And it’s an enormous, detailed Game Boy Color.

This is a class project for some kind of college design course. I hope she follows up with mockup cartridges for the Game Boy Color’s most beloved classics, like Austin Powers: Welcome to my Underground Lair.
